In this guide I want to give a practical decision framework for choosing roller blinds in a Bali villa — because the range of options is wider than most buyers realise, and the right choice genuinely differs by room, application and location in Bali.
Choosing by Room Application
Bedrooms: blackout fabric with side channels. Non-negotiable for guest comfort in Bali. The 6am sunrise intensity in Bali means any light gap at the edges of a blind will wake sleeping guests. Add motorisation if the window is above normal reach height or if you want one-touch operation as part of an evening routine.
Living areas facing east or west: solar control fabric (5–10% openness factor). This fabric reduces heat gain and glare from direct sun while maintaining an outside view. West-facing windows in Jimbaran, Seminyak and Uluwatu particularly benefit — afternoon sun from the ocean direction makes west-facing rooms very hot without solar control.
Living areas in softer light: sheer or screen fabric provides daytime privacy while keeping the room bright. Good for east-facing Ubud villas where light is gentler and view preservation is more important than heat control.
Flexible-use spaces: day-night blinds for the full range of light control from a single mechanism — sheer during the day, blackout in the evening.
Outdoor terraces: PVC for maximum rain protection; woven outdoor fabric for sheltered terraces where appearance is weighted more heavily.
When Motorisation Is Worth It
Motorise when: the window is above normal reach height, the blind is operated frequently (daily open/close routine), multiple windows in one room need simultaneous operation, or the property is managed remotely with pre-arrival prep requirements.
Manual chain is fine when: the window is easily accessible, the blind stays in one position most of the time (a storeroom or utility window), or budget is the primary constraint.
Mount Type
Recess mount (blind inside the window reveal): cleanest aesthetic, requires minimum 80mm reveal depth, some light gap at sides without channels. Face fix (fascia outside the wall): suits shallow reveals, better side blackout. Ceiling recess (blind built into ceiling pocket): requires planning during construction, completely invisible when open — the best aesthetic outcome for new builds.
