Best Blinds for Bali's Humidity

What actually survives year-round damp and coastal salt air — from someone who replaces the failures.

The single most common thing I'm called out to replace in Bali isn't a worn-out blind — it's a curtain that has gone mouldy, or a cheap blind whose hardware has seized solid with corrosion. Humidity is the quiet enemy of window treatments here, and the difference between a five-year solution and a one-year headache comes down to two choices: the fabric and the hardware. This is what I tell every client who asks what holds up best in our climate.

Why Humidity Is the Real Test in Bali

Bali rarely drops below 70% relative humidity, and through the wet season it sits much higher for weeks at a time. That constant moisture does three things to window treatments. It feeds mould and mildew on any fabric that holds dampness — heavy curtains are the worst offender, but so are textured upholstery-style blind fabrics. It accelerates corrosion on metal hardware, especially anywhere within a few kilometres of the coast where salt rides in on the sea breeze. And it makes anything that traps still air, like thick lined curtains, smell musty within months.

Roller blinds win here mostly because of what they don't do. A smooth roller fabric on a tube doesn't trap air or hold moisture the way folded curtain fabric does, it wipes clean in seconds, and it rolls up out of the airflow when not in use. For damp-prone rooms that advantage is decisive.

The Best Fabrics for Damp Rooms

PVC-Faced & Backed Fabrics

For bathrooms, poolside rooms and anywhere that gets genuinely wet, a PVC-faced or PVC-backed fabric is the most mould-resistant option. It doesn't absorb moisture, wipes clean with a damp cloth, and is the same family of fabric we use for blackout blinds, so you get darkness and damp resistance together.

Solar / Screen Mesh

Open-weave solar fabrics are essentially non-absorbent synthetic mesh. They dry instantly, never hold a musty smell, and cut heat and glare — ideal for humid living areas and verandah-adjacent rooms where you also want a view.

UV-Stable Polyester

Good-quality UV-stabilised polyester roller fabric resists both fading and the brittle degradation that humidity plus strong sun causes in cheaper fabric. It's the practical all-rounder for bedrooms and living rooms set back from direct wet exposure.

What to Avoid

Heavy lined curtains, natural untreated cottons and linens, and textured fabrics that hold moisture. They look lovely on day one and grow mould by the second wet season in most Bali rooms.

Hardware Matters as Much as Fabric

You can fit a perfect fabric and still have the blind fail because the bracket rusted. Near the coast — Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, beachfront Seminyak and Canggu — standard zinc and untreated aluminium components corrode visibly inside twelve to eighteen months. We specify stainless steel and anodised aluminium hardware for those locations as standard. Inland, in Ubud or central Denpasar, standard aluminium is usually fine, but we still avoid the cheapest plastic-and-steel chain mechanisms because the steel chain pins rust in humid air and eventually stain the fabric.

For motorised blinds in humid or outdoor positions, the motor's IP rating and ventilation matter. We match IP55 motors to covered terraces and IP67 to exposed ones, and we never put an indoor motor anywhere it can be reached by wind-blown rain. The details are on our motorised blinds and outdoor blinds pages.

My Short Answer

If someone wants one rule of thumb: choose smooth synthetic roller fabrics over any woven curtain, choose PVC-based fabric for wet rooms, and pay the small premium for marine-grade hardware if you're near the beach. Do those three things and humidity stops being a problem you think about. Skip them and you'll be replacing window treatments far sooner than you should.
